Vermont Passenger (P) Practice Test
Required to drive any vehicle designed for 16 or more people including the driver — transit buses, motorcoaches, shuttle and church buses. The knowledge test moves the center of gravity from cargo to people: pre-trip items specific to buses (emergency exits, interior condition, standee line), loading and unloading discipline, railroad-crossing stop rules that apply to buses even empty, prohibited hazardous cargo, and handling disruptive passengers. A skills test in a representative bus follows the knowledge test.
Who needs it: Bus, motorcoach, and shuttle drivers — any vehicle built for 16+ occupants.
Sample practice questions
Research on commercial drivers found that texting while driving multiplies crash risk by:
Answer: More than 20 times — Texting takes your eyes off the road for seconds at a time — at highway speed, a football field driven blind — and raises crash risk more than 20-fold.
At the end of your shift, your after-trip inspection should check for:
Answer: All of the above — Look for sleeping riders, lost articles, damage, and mechanical problems.
A rider wants to set a suitcase in the aisle. You should:
Answer: Not allow baggage in a doorway, aisle, or anywhere it blocks an exit — Carry-on baggage must never block a doorway, aisle, or exit.
Common mistakes on the Passenger test
- Missing the bus-specific railroad-crossing rules — stopping distances and when stopping is required
- Forgetting the standee line and interlock rules that never come up in freight study
- Skimming the emergency-exit inspection items — every exit gets checked, and the test asks how
- Assuming freight experience covers it — passenger questions are their own chapter for a reason
