Sample CDL practice questions

For a CDL, at what blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is a driver considered to be driving under the influence?

Answer: 0.04%

Commercial drivers are held to a stricter standard: 0.04% BAC is the legal limit for operating a CMV — half the 0.08% limit used for most passenger-vehicle drivers.

Roughly how much following distance should you keep at speeds under 40 mph?

Answer: 1 second per 10 feet of vehicle length

The rule of thumb is at least 1 second for each 10 feet of vehicle length below 40 mph. Above 40 mph, add 1 more second. A 60-ft rig at highway speed needs about 7 seconds.

What is the most important reason for doing a vehicle inspection?

Answer: Safety — for yourself and other road users

Inspections exist for safety. A defect you catch in the yard is far cheaper — and safer — than one that fails at 65 mph or gets you placed out of service at a roadside inspection.

On a long, steep downgrade, what should provide your primary braking?

Answer: The engine, by selecting a low gear

Engine braking in a proper low gear does the main work on a downgrade; the service brakes are used to supplement. Riding the brakes the whole way overheats them and can cause brake fade.

What is the leading cause of tire failure?

Answer: Under-inflation

Under-inflation is the most common cause of tire failure. It builds heat, wears the tire unevenly, and can lead to a blowout. Check pressures cold and often.

The training counts — officially

Since February 2022, first-time CDL applicants must complete Entry-Level Driver Training from a provider on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before taking the CDL test. Truckcess is a registered theory provider — the studying you do here is the required training, filed with the FMCSA. Behind-the-wheel training is completed with a local provider. See how ELDT works.
