South Dakota Tanker (N) Practice Test
Required for hauling liquids or gases in bulk — permanent or portable tanks above the regulatory thresholds. The test is short but conceptually specific: surge and how liquid momentum shoves the vehicle after the brakes are applied, outage and why a 'full' tank can't actually be full, baffled versus unbaffled (smooth-bore) tanks, and the high center of gravity that makes tankers the easiest trucks to roll in a curve taken at the posted car speed. Most modern fuel and chemical jobs expect N and H together — the combined X endorsement covers both.
Who needs it: Drivers pulling tank vehicles — fuel, milk, water, chemicals. Often paired with HazMat as the X endorsement.
Sample practice questions
Outage and weight limits often force you to haul:
Answer: Partial loads, which can surge — Leaving space means partial loads, and partial loads surge.
Liquid surge is:
Answer: The movement of liquid in a partially filled tank — Surge is liquid moving back and forth (or side to side) in a partly full tank.
You come to a complete stop at a light with a partial tanker. You should expect:
Answer: The truck may "nod" or be pushed forward as the liquid surges — Forward surge can push the truck ahead and make it rock; leave extra space.
Common mistakes on the Tanker test
- Underestimating surge in smooth-bore tanks — food-grade tanks can't have baffles, and the test knows it
- Confusing outage (expansion room) with just 'don't overfill' — you must know WHY liquids need it
- Taking posted curve speeds at face value — they're calculated for cars, and tankers roll at them
- Assuming baffles solve side-to-side surge — they only fight front-to-back
The Tanker (N) endorsement has no federal ELDT requirement — it's a knowledge test only, so practice is the whole game.
