New York Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Test
The knowledge behind the walk-around: what to inspect, in what order, and what 'good' looks like for each component — steering, suspension, brakes, tires, coupling, lights, and the in-cab checks. It shows up twice in licensing: as written questions on the knowledge tests, and as the spoken vehicle-inspection portion of the skills test where you walk the examiner around the truck and narrate every check. Studying it as a memorized script fails people; studying it as what-can-kill-you-and-how-to-spot-it passes them.
Who needs it: Every applicant — written questions now, and the spoken inspection exam at the skills test later.
Sample practice questions
Applied (brakes held) air-loss limits are:
Answer: 3 psi/min single, 4 psi/min combination — Holding the brakes: 3 single, 4 combination.
On the alternator, besides mounted secure and wiring, what do you check?
Answer: The belt tension and that it's not frayed (if belt-driven) — If belt-driven, check belt tension/condition; if gear-driven, say so.
Minimum tread depth on STEER (front) tires is:
Answer: 4/32 inch — Steer tires require 4/32 inch; other tires require 2/32 inch.
Common mistakes on the Pre-Trip test
- Memorizing a script without knowing WHY each item matters — examiners probe with follow-ups
- Skipping the in-cab portion (gauges, warning lights, brake checks) because the walk-around gets all the attention
- Not using the exact condition language — 'securely mounted, not cracked, not leaking' is the standard the examiner scores
- Practicing only from pictures — the spoken exam expects you to point at real components in order
