New Jersey General Knowledge Practice Test

The foundation test every CDL applicant takes, regardless of class or endorsement. It covers safe driving basics at commercial scale: speed and space management, stopping distance, night and winter driving, cargo securement fundamentals, emergency handling, and the rules that apply specifically to large vehicles. Nothing on it is exotic — but everything on it assumes you understand how differently an 80,000-pound vehicle behaves from the car you learned in. Most states draw their questions straight from the state CDL manual's general knowledge chapters.

Who needs it: Every CDL applicant, Class A or B, no exceptions — this is the first knowledge test at the counter.

Sample practice questions

Which freezes first?

Answer: Bridges and overpasses — Bridges and overpasses freeze first; cold air reaches them from above and below.

By holding a CDL and driving a CMV, you have agreed to what?

Answer: Alcohol and drug testing (implied consent) — Implied consent means you've already consented to alcohol/drug testing; refusing is a major offense.

You should move a seriously injured person only if:

Answer: They're in immediate danger, such as fire — Moving can worsen injuries; only move them to escape immediate danger.

Common mistakes on the General Knowledge test

  • Studying answer letters instead of the rule — the state shuffles wording, so memorized letters collapse on test day
  • Underestimating stopping-distance math: perception + reaction + braking distance questions are near-guaranteed
  • Skipping the cargo chapters because "that's a flatbed thing" — securement basics are on the general test
  • Confusing the 4-second following-distance rule of thumb with the 1-second-per-10-feet rule the manual actually teaches
  • Cramming the night before instead of spacing practice — retention under exam pressure comes from repetition

Studying with the full Truckcess course does double duty: the theory counts toward the federal ELDT requirement (Truckcess is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry).
