Michigan Pre-Trip Inspection Practice Test

The knowledge behind the walk-around: what to inspect, in what order, and what 'good' looks like for each component — steering, suspension, brakes, tires, coupling, lights, and the in-cab checks. It shows up twice in licensing: as written questions on the knowledge tests, and as the spoken vehicle-inspection portion of the skills test where you walk the examiner around the truck and narrate every check. Studying it as a memorized script fails people; studying it as what-can-kill-you-and-how-to-spot-it passes them.

Who needs it: Every applicant — written questions now, and the spoken inspection exam at the skills test later.

Sample practice questions

How should the trailer sit on the fifth wheel?

Answer: Flat, with no gap between the trailer and the fifth wheel — No gap; a gap means an improper or failed coupling.

Static (engine off, brakes released) air-loss limits are:

Answer: 2 psi/min single, 3 psi/min combination — Released: 2 single, 3 combination. (Applied is 3 single, 4 combination.)

What two things do you check on the water pump?

Answer: Mounted secure and not leaking — Mounted secure, not leaking (often shows as a coolant weep).

Common mistakes on the Pre-Trip test

  • Memorizing a script without knowing WHY each item matters — examiners probe with follow-ups
  • Skipping the in-cab portion (gauges, warning lights, brake checks) because the walk-around gets all the attention
  • Not using the exact condition language — 'securely mounted, not cracked, not leaking' is the standard the examiner scores
  • Practicing only from pictures — the spoken exam expects you to point at real components in order

Studying with the full Truckcess course does double duty: the theory counts toward the federal ELDT requirement (Truckcess is listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry).
