Kentucky Hazardous Materials (H) Practice Test

The endorsement for hauling placarded hazardous materials — and the hardest knowledge test most drivers ever take, because it's built on tables: hazard classes, the placarding rules, the segregation chart for what can't ride together, and shipping-paper requirements. It's also the only endorsement wrapped in federal security requirements — a TSA security threat assessment with fingerprinting comes before the state will issue it, and the endorsement must be renewed on a cycle rather than earned once. The pay bump exists precisely because the barrier is real.

Who needs it: Drivers hauling placarded loads — tankers of fuel, chemicals, compressed gases. Required before the H prints on the license.

Sample practice questions

Security awareness training must be given to:

Answer: Every hazmat employee — All hazmat employees must receive security awareness training.

As you brake a partially filled tank, the liquid surges forward. The effect is that:

Answer: The surge can push the vehicle forward, lengthening the stop — Forward surge can shove the vehicle ahead just as you try to stop — even into an intersection — so brake early with steady pressure and extra room.

A driver is "attending" a parked explosives vehicle only if:

Answer: Awake, not in the sleeper, and within 100 feet with a clear view — Awake, out of the sleeper, within 100 feet, with an unobstructed view.

Common mistakes on the HazMat test

  • Trying to memorize the whole segregation table instead of the handful of pairings the test actually probes
  • Confusing when placards are required by ANY amount versus the 1,001-lb table threshold
  • Forgetting the shipping-paper rules — within reach, visible, and where they ride when you leave the cab
  • Not budgeting for the TSA screening timeline — the knowledge test is one step, the background check is its own clock
