Hawaii Passenger (P) Practice Test
Required to drive any vehicle designed for 16 or more people including the driver — transit buses, motorcoaches, shuttle and church buses. The knowledge test moves the center of gravity from cargo to people: pre-trip items specific to buses (emergency exits, interior condition, standee line), loading and unloading discipline, railroad-crossing stop rules that apply to buses even empty, prohibited hazardous cargo, and handling disruptive passengers. A skills test in a representative bus follows the knowledge test.
Who needs it: Bus, motorcoach, and shuttle drivers — any vehicle built for 16+ occupants.
Sample practice questions
Under 49 CFR 392.82, while driving you may:
Answer: Use a phone hands-free — mounted or within easy reach, started with a single button touch or voice command — No holding, no multi-button dialing, no reaching out of the seated belted position; single-touch hands-free use is the only phone use allowed.
The floor covering inside the bus must be:
Answer: Not loose or damaged — Loose or damaged floor covering is a trip hazard, especially while the bus is moving.
On a long, steep downgrade you should:
Answer: Use a lower gear and conserve the brakes — Use a lower gear so the engine helps slow the bus and the brakes don't overheat.
Common mistakes on the Passenger test
- Missing the bus-specific railroad-crossing rules — stopping distances and when stopping is required
- Forgetting the standee line and interlock rules that never come up in freight study
- Skimming the emergency-exit inspection items — every exit gets checked, and the test asks how
- Assuming freight experience covers it — passenger questions are their own chapter for a reason
