Colorado School Bus (S) Practice Test

Layered on top of the Passenger endorsement — you can't hold S without P. The test covers what makes school transportation its own discipline: the loading and unloading sequence that accounts for most student fatalities (which happen outside the bus, not inside), the danger zones around the bus and mirror checks that cover them, red-light and stop-arm procedures, evacuation planning, and railroad crossings with children aboard. States add their own layers — many require background checks and refresher training on a cycle. A skills test in a school bus completes it.

Who needs it: School bus drivers. Requires the Passenger endorsement first; S rides on top of P.

Sample practice questions

Before pulling away from an unloading stop, you should:

Answer: Count the students to confirm the location of all of them and that they're clear of the danger zone — **Count** the students to account for all of them and confirm they're clear before you move.

Your school bus has an engine fire. You should:

Answer: Shut off the engine, evacuate the students upwind, and fight only a small fire by aiming through the gap of the partly opened compartment — Kill the engine and get students off first; swinging the compartment open feeds the fire a rush of air.

Which mirrors show the danger zone directly in front of the bus and the path a crossing student walks?

Answer: The crossover mirrors — The **crossover mirrors** (convex, on the front corners) cover the front danger zone and the crossing student's path.

Common mistakes on the School Bus test

  • Underweighting loading/unloading — it's the deadliest phase and the most-tested content on the exam
  • Not memorizing the danger zones and which mirror covers each one
  • Confusing when the amber warning lights versus the red lights and stop arm activate
  • Forgetting S requires P — taking the tests out of order wastes a trip to the counter
