Arizona School Bus (S) Practice Test
Layered on top of the Passenger endorsement — you can't hold S without P. The test covers what makes school transportation its own discipline: the loading and unloading sequence that accounts for most student fatalities (which happen outside the bus, not inside), the danger zones around the bus and mirror checks that cover them, red-light and stop-arm procedures, evacuation planning, and railroad crossings with children aboard. States add their own layers — many require background checks and refresher training on a cycle. A skills test in a school bus completes it.
Who needs it: School bus drivers. Requires the Passenger endorsement first; S rides on top of P.
Sample practice questions
The rule about backing a school bus is:
Answer: Avoid backing; if you must, use a lookout and don't back with students outside near the bus unless unavoidable and a responsible adult guides you — **Avoid backing.** If unavoidable, use a lookout, and never back with students near the bus unless truly unavoidable and a responsible adult is guiding you.
In a convex side mirror, objects appear:
Answer: Smaller and farther than they really are — Convex mirrors give a wide-angle but distorted view; objects look **smaller and farther** than they really are.
The outside convex side mirrors are mounted below the flat mirrors and show:
Answer: The area along the sides, the front of the rear tires on the ground, and at least one traffic lane on each side — They give a wide view along the sides, the front of the rear tires on the ground, and at least one lane each side.
Common mistakes on the School Bus test
- Underweighting loading/unloading — it's the deadliest phase and the most-tested content on the exam
- Not memorizing the danger zones and which mirror covers each one
- Confusing when the amber warning lights versus the red lights and stop arm activate
- Forgetting S requires P — taking the tests out of order wastes a trip to the counter
